I am considering buying a 79 A-11. The transmission works fine, but the shift lever does not really lock into place such as P,R,N,D ETC.... Is this a transmission problem and what if any thing can I do? Thank you....Bob

Bob, the good news is that your proposed purchase has the ubiquitous GM TurboHydramatic 350/400, which is a great transmission and is available everywhere, including junk yards, for a song (so to speak). Virtually any transmission shop has the expertise to adjust or repair this nearly bulletproof xmission. I'm not even close to being knowledgeable about the innards of the TH 350/400, but I do know this: a complete rebuild or exchange shouldn't run more than $1000-$1200, and that's assuming the worst. I wish my '70 A12 had the TH in place of the Borg-Warner (Bog Warning) Dual-Range auto (a future project) but my '78 has the TH 400, and it is solid. Talk to most drag racers, and you'll find they use the TH or the Ford C4 xmission because they are nearly indestructible. Y'all correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the TH has a lever adjustment at the xmission itself that can correct this. I wouldn't fret over this. Look at the car you are considering from the point of view of body panel/frame completeness and integrity, rather than the mechanicals, as the mechanicals are readily available and repairable. Decent Checker panels, doors, frame and trim are much less so. When I bought my '70, I was very pleased with the mechanicals, but I missed a serious frame rust issue that I now have to deal with quickly. Missing trim such as door panels, etc can be very frustrating and expensive. A screwy TH trans. is easily handled. If you are comfortable with the car otherwise, go for it! Decent Checkers are getting harder to find and more pricey. Just remember this: there are about fifty Camaros/Mustangs/Chevelles for sale for every Checker, and you'll enjoy the car more. I've owned just about every late 60's to early 70's muscle car you can name, and I love my Checkers the best.
