The Checker Car Club of America was organized in April of 1982 for the preservation, enjoyment and information on Checker automobiles manufactured from 1922-1982 (year production ceased). In 2000 the club was incorporated under the name Checker Car Club of America, Inc. as a 501(c)(7) Not For Profit and is recognized as such by the State of Indiana and the IRS.

Ownership is not a prerequisite for membership and all are welcome.

If you wish to join, dues are only $25 per year (North America) and $30 (Foreign) in US funds. We accept check, money order, BillPay®, and PayPal®. If you wish to pay via PayPal® the fee is increased by $3 to defray the cost of their transaction fee - Don't forget to include your address the first time. Membership includes a subscription to the quarterly newsletter (mailed in January, April, July and October). Plus access to restricted areas and information on our website. Membership runs from February through January of the following year. If you join in the middle of a year, back issues for that year will be mailed to you.

2015 Convention Virtual Committee Request

The 2015 Checker Car Club of America convention is heading to South Bend, Indiana, and since Tim and Zandra Bower are the only club members in town, Tim thought (and some of you suggested) that he would enlist a virtual committee to advise and act as sounding board from time to time.  June 25, 26, 27, 2015, are the dates (Thursday through Saturday) with Sunday as the go home date.

We have secured the hotel.  The Inn at St. Mary's will be handy and provide a great visible area for the cars.  Check it out The rate is $105/night which includes hot breakfast.  There is a nice sized first floor meeting room that is free.
We are thinking about the Studebaker Museum for the banquet. We would, of course, pay for the catered meal.

Help Us Redesign Our Web Site

The current and future state of the Club website, Checker Taxi Stand, was discussed at the Board meeting held during the 2014 Annual Meeting in New York City. It was agreed by all that this web site is in need of a major upgrade. Accordingly, the Board began conversations with several Club members and agreed that Matt Fry (our current site administrator) and George Laszlo would move ahead to formulate a redesign plan. The following is an update as to where things stand today.

First, everyone agrees that this site needs updating. Having accepted that, it has to be recognized that making the necessary changes requires a lot of research, input and planning. We don't want to make changes just because we can. Also, because modern technology allows people to do things quickly (e.g. setting up a Facebook group), there is the temptation to use the Nike philosophy of "Just Do It."

Second, based on the above, we need to recognize that a Club web site has to reflect the mission, goals and objectives of the organization. So, it's not just about what tools we can give our members and what photos we may post. If the web site upgrade is going to be successful, it has to be kept in this context.

Third, the existing web site needs to be evaluated to see what is working and what is not. Other tools also need to be evaluated to see what they do best and what is missing. For example, Facebook is great for up to the minute things but not the best place to find out what happened two years ago.

Fourth, we need to see how the web site relates to the Club newsletter and the annual convention. Which is the dog and which is the tail?

Fifth, the Club needs to protect its intellectual property not because we want to control the way its disseminated but to assure that it can be made available over time. Just think of the uproar that was caused when the photo gallery on this site was destroyed!

There are other considerations as well. But, to make a long story a bit shorter, the Board members, Matt Fry and I have been collaborating on a web site revamp project. We are looking at the big picture (club mission and strategy) while evaluating what's good and bad about the current web site. This will lead to a redesign which the Board will then approve. Of course, input from the members will be very important. With that in mind, we would like to ask if you'd like to participate in this project and to what extent? Past work experience has taught me that discussing things in the abstract does not work too well. It's much better to have a concrete plan that people can react to and make modifications to that as necessary. I hope that this is exactly what we will be able to do and assure that your input is received and heard.

In the meantime, please feel free to give our member communication strategy some thought and send over any ideas for us to consider. I use the term "member communication strategy" deliberately rather than "web site redesign" for the reasons given in the 5 points above.

A lot of work needs to get done. We want to do it right and we want to do it with your input.
