Addendum to cooling article

This installation article addressed a 4.3 V-6 setup, which is about 4 inches shorter than the V-8 setup. I don't mention it in the article but Chevy makes a couple of different water pumps, a "short" one and a "long" one. Most Chevys have a long pump installed. If you have a clearance problem trying to add electric fans, maybe a short water pump with a flex fan will solve your problem.

According to my records, the "short" aluminum one is GM # 14011012. The GM "short" aluminum pump is a pricey piece at about $110 from either GM or NAPA. It's not normally listed as a replacement pump when you just call up a Chevy 350 but the hot rod and Corvette guys know about it.

The short pump should run the same direction (clockwise) and be designed to be used with a V-belt system. Also, new motors with the plastic timing cover will need a special water pump clearance bolt GM # 14010976. If you have the metal timing chain cover, you "should" be OK.

Of course, if you have installed a new style motor with the serpentine belt setup all bets are off because the water pump usually rotates in the opposite direction on them.
